“A Bilingual DE&I White Paper ZINE that questions the very foundation of diversity work.”
Before we speak about “diversity,”
we believe it is time to reclaim our ability to ask better questions.
Today, “diversity” is discussed everywhere in society. Yet the term is often used like a checklist, resulting in initiatives that feel hollow or purely performative.
This paper was created to help DE&I break free from such superficiality—to move beyond “the search for the right answer” and return to its relational, human core. Rather than importing Western frameworks as they are, this paper seeks to redefine DE&I in our own words, drawing on Japan’s cultural and philosophical foundations— including Buddhist thought and the relational sensibilities embedded in everyday life.
For the practitioners who carry everything alone.
For those who stand between exhaustion and hope.
“Beyond Checkboxes” is a companion for anyone who wishes to rise again— not with answers, but with questions that open new paths forward.

How This Publication Was Created
This book was developed by PROJECT SOLIT, an organisation practising inclusive design in Japan, in collaboration with experts, corporate practitioners, and people with lived experience working across various fields both domestically and internationally.
Through workshops, interviews, and on-the-ground observations, we carefully collected real challenges and the questions that arise directly from practice.
By reinterpreting Western DE&I theories through the lens of Japan’s social and cultural context, we engaged in a process of “translation” and “reweaving”—not to prescribe answers, but to offer language that invites readers to think alongside us.
